Twitter may soon allow tweets longer than 140 characters, according to a report from Re/code. It's unclear when the change would occur, and there's still no word on whether the longer tweets will have any limits or be set apart from traditional tweets.
Twitter's 140 character limit has been a distinctive feature, and helped Twitter become such a unique and alienating community. However, while longer tweets may make the news headlines, 140-character tweets have been on the way out for some time.
In May of last year, Twitter let users tag up to 10 other users in photos. Twitter also removed the 140-character limit from direct messages and now lets users embed tweets within retweets.

That Twitter would do away with the 140-character limit isn't surprising, even if it would kill what made the micro-blogging service so special.
