As if January wasn't already a miserable enough (not for everyone, mind you), following the come down of Christmas, we're all landed with a moral hangover about how grossly we've been mistreating our bodies. And so the detox commences.
But science is finally on our side for once, with the release of information that states detoxing isn't worth the hassle.
How do we know this piece of groundbreaking knowledge which has already made 2016 a great year, despite being six days in? Well, a dietician based at the University of Queensland, Dr Veronique Chacay, has revealed that our bodies are designed to naturally detox.
So no matter how much celery, spinach and ginger you down in one shake, you're probably not adding to your body cleanse.
Doctor Chacay explained in an article that "the human body is a comprehensive, self-mending, self-detoxing apparatus.
"The liver metabolises and detoxifies any dietary constituents and any external toxins entering the body from a variety of exposure." So that accounts for the wine by the bucket-load you consumed over the festive period, then.
Apparently, "there's no scientific basis or high-level evidence showing the benefits of commercial short-term detox programs.
"The body will perform its detoxification tasks regardless of whether you're undertaking a rigid detox cure, or a gourmet food and wine tasting marathon. But providing the right ingredients for optimal function daily, rather than opting for a quick-fix detox, is the key."
So now you know. You either invest in those green juices as a way of life that you're going to stick to, or you sack them off once and for all. We know which one we're opting for.
