Here's a horrifying moment: Surfer Tom Dosland may have bitten off a bit more than he could chew when he took on this massive swell in Hawaii. El Niño—that weather thing you occasionally bring up at the bar after a couple of drinks—is warming the eastern Pacific and generating record waves off the island state, including some as high as fifty feet. Dosland caught one of the monsters, but seems to lose his position and make the decision to bail pretty early on. He free-falls head first towards what surfers call the jaws of the wave, a severely dangerous place to be.

In the end, he lived—miraculously—to tell the tale.

Don't worry, @tommyd_4 is alive. His leash, on the other had, might be a little stretched out. Full gallery from the onslaught at Jaws these past two days, at the #Sufer site. Photo: @erikaederphotography #TrackingElNiño #SurferPhotos
