Google have had to make an apology for their 'Send and Mic Drop' feature which they added as an April Fools joke.

Yesterday the tech giant announced they would be making the service available for Gmail customers. It worked by sending a Minion character animation as a reply to your email conversation and muting any further responses. Very useful for urgent business emails and sure to cause no headaches...

Whoever had the lightbulb moment at Google placed the new hoax button next to the regular send button confusing everyone and causing chaos. Well, chaos in the form of inundated internet help forums.

The gif showed one of the diminutive yellow characters dropping a microphone and walking away, playing on the idea of 'mic dropping' after a slamming joke on stage.

Users complained that they pressed the new button unaware of its existence as the mechanics of the plug-in hadn't been explained. One Gmail customer even claimed it cost him a job he was in the process of applying for.

Google pulled the trick after just half an hour and put their hands up saying 'Well, it looks like we pranked ourselves this year.' 

We imagine the meetings at Google HQ aren't too funny this morning.
