Half The People Buying Vinyl Aren't Even Listening To It

Who knew hipsters sometimes did things just for show?

This weekend hundreds of people danced in the streets of Brixton and Soho to celebrate Record Store Day, undoubtedly glad of an excuse to drink Red Stripe in the street four months before Notting Hill Carnival.

And despite the fact everyone is listening to Spotify and very few people seem to know how to work a turntable properly, vinyl sales are increasing: up more than 60% and now on course to reach figures not seen since the 80s.

And yet a survey by the BBC has revealed that almost half the people who buy vinyl never even listen to it.

Of those buyers questioned, 41% said they owned a turntable but didn't use it and 7% didn't even own a turntable.

One student the BBC spoke to said: "I just collect them, put them on my wall, and think they look great."
