The Beach Boys: sun, sea, (pretending to) surf and smiles. Not a cloud in sight for those happy-go-lucky scamps. Or that’s how it seemed. Bill Pohlad’s Brian Wilson biopic chronicles the exciting rise of The Beach Boys and the darker days that followed the release of 1966 masterpiece Pet Sounds. Paul Dano (There Will Be Blood, 12 Years A Slave) plays Wilson in his surf-pop heyday, with John Cusack taking over for his dramatic Eighties wilderness years. Taking a detour from the biopic tradition of replicating every last detail, Dano told Esquire he felt the project was more about capturing Wilson’s spirit. “I doubt I’ll ever have as much fun researching a movie again.” God only knows.
