In the pre-production stage, Hollywood movie scripts are usually passed around like Werther's Originals in a bowls club, falling victim to countless edits and rewrites before they're finally conjured to life on our cinema screens.

And the same goes for even the most iconic of lines. Just take a look at some of these memorable movie quotes, collated by Reddit user numendil, that were chopped and changed in the pursuit of perfection.

Star Wars: Episode V The Empire Strikes Back

It's well known fact that this line was improvised by Harrison Ford - and thank our lucky stars it was, lest we be saddled with the original Terminator-esque response.

David Fincher originally wanted to use the abortion line straight from the Chuck Palahniuk's novel, but the studio wouldn't allow it. As an act of revenge, Fincher agreed to replace the line as long as they wouldn't ask him to change it once again.

When the studio found out that Fincher had chosen "I haven't been fucked like that since grade school", they begged him to put the abortion line back in. He refused.

"The Force" was originally "The force of others", which is a far more heartwarming line, if you ask us.

A litany of other aspects were also scrapped and skewed from late science fiction author Leigh Brackett's original story outline, especially with the Darth Vader character. Not only was he not supposed to be Luke's father, but he also owned a collection of pet gargoyles.
