Warning: The article below contains major spoilers for the most recent episode of Game of Thrones, "The Door."

Game of Thrones viewers were left heartbroken after Hodor's tragic origin story was revealed in the latest episode "The Door,"  and no doubt some are still blubbing.

As it turns out, A Song of Ice and Fire author George R. R. Martin had planned the tragic scenes all along.

It was revealed this week that Kristian Nairn's character got his Hodor name after the fateful moment where he was killed by the White Walkers' army of the dead while "holding the door" for Bran Stark and Meera Reed to escape.

Executive producer and writer on the show David Benioff spoke in an "inside the episode" video for HBO, and revealed that Martin had always known where Hodor came from, and where he was going.

"We had this meeting with George Martin and we were trying to get as much information as we can out of him, and probably the most shocking revelation he had for us was when he told us the origin on Hodor," Benioff explained.

Executive producer D. B.  Weiss also spoke about being told the tragic origin story, describing it as "one of the saddest and most affecting things."
