It was nearly two years ago that CBS first announced that it had began production on a new Star Trek series to premiere in January of 2017. After more than a year of delays—and four months after its intended premiere date—we're finally getting the first trailer for Star Trek: Discovery.

This series takes place about 10 years before the original Star Trek on the USS Discovery, helmed by Captain Lorca (Jason Isaacs). The show, however, is told from the perspective of its First Officer, Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin Green). And in this first trailer, it's clear that all that extra time has paid off. From the incredible opening desert landscape to the visual effects aboard the ship and the alien creatures, the production values are way above network television and even HBO quality.

Considering the immense pressure on this show, it's clear that no expense was spared on the new series. And that's good news for anyone who's hoping to see a really pretty space show—and is willing to use yet another streaming service.
