You'd think that after the runaway success of some of its in-house creations, Netflix would do all it could to hold on to its original content and make the most of it.

But Netflix's head honcho Reed Hastings says that he wants his company to cancel more shows to make sure it doesn't rest on its laurels – and therefore take more risks.

"We've cancelled very few shows," he told CNBC. "I'm always pushing the content team. We have to take more risks – you have to try more crazy things. Because we should have a higher cancel rate overall."

By being more risky with the content that is taken on, Reed reckons there is a bigger chance of huge successes – instead of middle-of-the-road safe-players.

"You get some winners that are just unbelievable winners, like 13 Reasons Why," he said. "It surprised us. It's a great show, but we didn't realise just how it would catch on."

One of the very few shows that has been cancelled by Netflix is of course Baz Luhrmann's Get Down, which was the first original not to get a second season.

Alongside that, Marco Polo only got a two-season run before being cut off without any sort of proper ending.
