It's been 10 years since The Sopranos suddenly cut to black and left our screens, so speculation has been endless about ways it could come back.

Of course, a continuation of the story looks virtually impossible following the sad passing of star James Gandolfini, but could things turn to the past?

Well, creator David Chase has had his say on the matter and ignited hope that we could see a prequel series about the much-loved characters.

Speaking of continuing The Sopranos where we left off, the producer told Entertainment Weekly: "I wouldn't want to see that happen, no. Like recasting? Everybody's getting older, you can't match people anymore."

However, he teased: "I could conceive of maybe a prequel of The Sopranos. I could never see [a return of the show] except as a prequel."

But cool your excitement – HBO has since confirmed that it has no Sopranos prequel in development, and that Chase's quote was merely speculative.

Oh well. At least this may get the ball rolling for some more Sopranos in the future.
