If one were to look at the recent successes of 13 Reasons Why and Stranger Things, there are two genres that do really well for Netflix: teen dramas with problematic depictions of death and sci-fi horror. Death Note, an adaptation of the manga series about a schoolkid who finds a notebook that will kill anyone whose name is written in it, might naturally be Netflix's next big hit.

Though the series isn't due out until 25 August, it caused some controversy with its teaser trailer when fans discovered that no Asian actors were cast in the main roles. The new film stars Lakeith Stanfield as L facing off against Nat Wolff's Light Turner, who has the titular book.

This first trailer gives the first look at L and more scenes with Ryuk, a Japanese spirit of death voiced by Willem DaFoe.

While the casting is questionable, this early trailer, which also stars The Leftovers' Margaret Qualley as Mia, looks creepy as hell.
