It's been heavily, heavily hinted at without being explicitly confirmed, and Game of Thrones fans have long suspected it to be the case, but the rumour that Jon Snow is actually a Targaryen has finally been confirmed. We think.

In a move that almost definitely got him in trouble, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau – that's Jaime Lannister – recently let slip that Jon Snow as we know him is dead.

But don't expect another resurrection, because Jon Snow's death is purely symbolic.

"Jon Snow is dead", Nikolaj revealed on last night's Jimmy Kimmel Live. "Jon Stark Targaryen has risen from the dead."

The smooth operator that he is, Nikolaj quickly backtracked. "What? I mean, I'm just making that up," he added. Too little, too late, hun.

As the premiere of Game of Thrones' penultimate season draws ever closer, the cast have been dropping tantalising hints left, right and centre about what fans can expect.

Tyrion Lannister himself Peter Dinklage recently admitted that his character is not exactly looking forward to reuniting with his sister Cersei. We don't blame him.

"[Tyrion is] returning home, and returning home a new person," Dinklage said. "He has Dany and the dragons on his side but he is a very different person than when he left this place.

"And he's returning to a brother he loves and a sister he dot dot dot, he's bracing himself." That literal "dot dot dot" is too cryptic for us to handle.

The penultimate season of Game of Thrones finally begins on HBO in the US on Sunday, 16 July and Monday, 17 July on Sky Atlantic in the UK. Good luck avoiding the spoilers.
