Judging by the poster above, The Walking Dead wants to remind us that Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) has secretly united his Alexandria survivors with those of the Hilltop and The Kingdom in order to gain the upper hand against Negan.

Just don't count out Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) quite yet! If last season taught us anything, it's that Negan always has a trick up his sleeve whether it's undercutting Rick's pact with Jadis's Scavengers or turning Eugene against his friends.

Tom Payne, who plays Jesus, recently hinted that beyond being "out-of-this-world amazing", season eight will be a course correction for The Walking Dead after a critical backlash and ratings drop for its most recent run.

The actor teased: "I always told myself I wouldn't say what I've heard other cast members say every other year, which is, 'Oh, the next season is gonna be this! And the new episode is so many superlatives and so many words you use!' And I'm like, 'Come on, you can't say the same things every year!'

"But then I had to bite my tongue and say, 'Well, actually...'"

Many questions remain about the road ahead, particularly whether we'll finally see the return of Rick's lost ally Heath and whether Negan will actually be MIA for a portion of the eighth season.

Hopefully we'll get our answers when The Walking Dead returns to the US and the UK in October.
