Ian McShane will be joining the cast of the Hellboy reboot as our hero's adoptive father.

The American Gods star has signed on for the role of Trevor Bruttenholm, which was previously played by John Hurt, in the much-anticipate Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

He'll be joining Stranger Things' David Harbour, who is replacing Ron Perlman in the title role for the new movie. Neil Marshall (The Descent, Game of Thrones) is directing.

Bruttenholm (pronounced 'Broom' for some reason) is an academic and expert on the supernatural who heads up the Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defense (BPRD).

He died very early on in the first film (and even earlier in the comics), but later stories have explored his life from World War II and beyond.

Hellboy's real father is Azzael, a demon and duke of hell. Bruttenholm adopted him after he was summoned to Earth by Rasputin and his Nazi allies(!) during World War II, helping to avert Hellboy's destiny of destroying the world. Cheers for that, Broom.

The new film will see Hellboy facing off against a mediaeval sorceress – possibly Nimue, the Arthurian villain who was a major antagonist in the comic.
