This season of Game Of Thrones has been one of family reunions, fan theories coming to fruition, and epic battles.

But as well as all of that, there has also been a lot of talk of the Children Of The Forest – especially in the latest episode, 'The Spoils Of War'.

Jon Snow shows Daenerys Targaryen a load of cave paintings that seem to depict the War for the Dawn — a legendary conflict in George R.R. Martin's A Song Of Ice And Fire series in which the Children Of The Forest and the First Men joined forces to defeat the White Walkers.

"The Children of the Forest made these," Jon tells her. "A very long time ago. They were here together, the Children and the First Men. They fought together against their common enemy. Despite their differences, despite their suspicions, together. We need to do the same if we're going to survive. Because the enemy is real, it's always been real."

But who actually are the Children Of The Forest?

Well, if you remember correctly, they are those mossy-looking creatures who rescued Bran Stark from the White Walkers in season 4.

And in season 6, we saw COTF main man/woman/plant, Leaf, create the very first White Walker - The Night King no less - in a flashback.

She then sacrificed herself to save Bran from the White Walkers by allowing them to devour her before she set off a magical grenade.

No one is actually 100% sure who the Children Of The Forest are, but some speculate that they may have been created by an otherworldly being themselves, much like the White Walkers. The big difference being that they're goodies. Right? So now you're clear.
