James Corden has delivered a powerful and emotional message in response to the tragic events in Barcelona.

Yesterday, 13 people were killed and dozens injured when a man drove his van into crowds on Las Ramblas in what Spanish police are describing as a terror attack, with five suspected terrorists shot dead in a second vehicle attack in Cambrils, Spain.

Like he did after other terror attacks earlier this year in London and Manchester, James opened The Late Late Show with a heartfelt message that deserves to be read in full.

"You will, by now, have heard about the tragic events today in Barcelona. It saddens me that once again I need to start our programme talking about another appalling tragedy in the world," he noted.

"When we hear about London, Paris, Stockholm and now Barcelona, you can almost start to become numb to it, like this is becoming something normal and we don't need to talk about it here on our show.

"But we think we mustn't allow it to become something that's normal, we must talk about it so that we will remember how sad, horrific and tragic these moments are.

"To the people of Spain and Barcelona, I just want to add to the rest of the world's outpouring of love and give our thoughts for you. We are thinking about the victims and their families right now on what must be an unimaginable day of horror for them."

James concluded: "Our job here is to bring a bit of light and levity to the end of your day in a world where it is becoming often too hard to find."

Spain's Prime Minister Mariana Rajoy has announced three days of national mourning and a minute's silence will be held later today.
