After Game of Thrones' seventh season episode 'Beyond the Wall', we've learned a lot more about the show's villains: the White Walkers.

But what the hell are they, really? What's the difference between a White Walker and a wight? Considering they never speak and only appear sporadically, it can get rather confusing. Here's all we know about the marauding menace so far.

The Night King

1. He is the leader of all the White Walkers and wights, and was the first of their kind.

2. He was created by the Children of the Forest using untested magic, as they needed reinforcements to tackle the First Men. Originally a First Man, Leaf pressed a dragonglass dagger into the Night King's chest, causing his eyes to turn blue and turning him into the first White Walker. It is unknown what exactly he did next.

3. Like all of the White Walker leaders, he has icy horns that resemble a crown of ice, along with black armour made out of an unspecified material.

4. He can turn living humans – or at least infants (see below) – into White Walkers just by touching them. It is unknown if other White Walkers can create their own White Walkers.

5. He can 'mark' someone by touching them. He did this to Bran in a vision, and he now has a blue hand-mark on his forearm. This means he now knows exactly where Bran is.

6. He seems to be able to detect when someone is warging into another animal, though this might just be due to marking Bran.

White Walkers

1. Unlike the inferior wights, White Walkers can be identified by their long wispy white hair or white beard. They have pale grey-white skin, and stretched out skin across their large frames, making them appear mummified.

2. It is assumed that most White Walkers are turned while still a child and eventually age and morph into a large humanoid being. We have yet to see an older human being turned into a White Walker while still alive, aside from the Night King. It may require a dragonglass blade to turn a living adult.

3. There seems to be some kind of hierarchy among the White Walkers, as the Night King is usually joined by other horse-riding rulers, who also have icy horns and black armour.

4. Fire doesn't appear to hurt them, as they have been seen to walk through flames unaffected.

5. Their main weakness is either weapons made out of dragonglass or Valyrian steel. Both materials smash them to pieces, though the effect of Valyrian steel is far more instant.

6. They appear to communicate with each other and with wights telepathically, as they do not speak.

7. They have superhuman strength, and can freeze anything they touch.

8. They have weapons made from some kind of unique ice crystal, such as the Night King's spear which killed the dragon Viserion.

9. They cannot revive corpses if the body is burned in a fire.

10. Like the Night King, they can revive corpses and turn them into wights, without the need to touch them.

Wights

1. Unlike White Walkers, wights keep the form of their body when they died, except they now have icy blue eyes.

2. Wights are practically indestructible, though they are very susceptible to fire. Their flesh is extremely flammable, and will easily catch fire and continue to burn if exposed to even a small flame. Even if decapitated or ripped apart, their body parts will continue to move.

3. Wights only 'die' when the White Walker who revived them is killed.

4. They can call each other with a piercing scream, alerting others to their position.

5. They cannot swim, but they don't appear to drown.

6. They appear to remember how to use a sword, but they have yet to be seen to use other, more complex weapons such as a bow and arrow.

7. It is unknown if they remember anything from their previous lives, but the wight of Night's Watch member Othor appeared to remember the way to Jeor Mormont's quarters.

8. They appear to be able to complete tasks set to them by the White Walkers, such as attaching a giant chain to a dragon.

9. Any living creature can apparently be turned into a wight, from horses to polar bears to giants to dragons. Nothing and nobody is safe...
