*SPOILERS*

If Jon Snow's speech about lies and honesty hit a little close to home during the Game of Thrones finale, Liam Cunningham (AKA Ser Davos Seaworth) may have an explanation why. That scene—where Jon honourably discloses his true allegiance to Queen Daenerys Targaryen, even though it ruins chances of peace with Cersei Lannister—was actually filmed on the same day Donald Trump was elected American president.

"That speech that Jon Snow gave about the nature of lies and what's been said, and what happens if we don't stick to our word — we filmed that on exactly the day that a certain POTUS was elected and it had incredible resonance while we were filming it," Cunningham told Variety.

With that in mind, Jon's line about integrity is even more chilling:

"When enough people make false promises, words stop meaning anything. Then there are no more answers, only better and better lies, and lies won't help us in this fight."

Sound familiar?

The election result was a hot topic of discussion on the Game of Thrones set that day, Cunningham revealed. ("Was there a person on the planet not discussing that election?") In the wake of the news, to hearing Jon's words for the first time felt even more significant.

"The results had just been announced the morning we filmed that particular scene — that particular day of that scene with Mr. Kit Harington," he added. "We may have been rehearsing that scene. But that was the first time that Kit Harington had said those words on that platform in that scene. So it had a certain resonance, I'm sure you'll understand."
