Darren Aronofsky's intense mind-melter mother! opened in cinemas last weekend and instantly became a massive talking point. But not, however, a massive hit. Box office takings were disappointing – this is the worst wide launch of a Jennifer Lawrence movie so far.

And despite the fact that many critics absolutely loved the film, audiences were not so keen.

CinemaScore, which surveys US audiences on movies' opening weekends, reports a unanimous disapproval rating of 'F' – the lowest rating possible.

Some audience members on social media voiced their dislike, with one saying, 'hands up if you feel personally victimised' by the film.

And another complaining that it doesn't make sense and isn't explained at the end.

For some though, a low CinemaScore rating is a badge of honour.

Other movies which bagged an 'F' include William Friedkin's Bug and outback slasher movie Wolf Creek, both of which have solid fan bases among horror lovers.

Some have complained that the movie has been mis-marketed though, making it look more like a traditional horror than it is, while others have accused it of being pretentious. It's certainly provoking debate.
