The Simpsons used its Season 29 premiere last night to make a striking plea for aid to Puerto Rico. Following the Game of Thrones-themed episode, a five-second still image showed the Springfield gang gathered together holding up the Puerto Rican flag and asking for help in supporting the region, which has been left decimated by Hurricane Maria.

Marge also holds up a "Unido" sign, while Lisa stands in front of the frame with a tear falling out of one eye. The image also includes callouts for disaster relief charities like Unicef, Save the Children, and One America Appeal.

This much-needed plea comes after President Trump's shameful attack on San Juan mayor Carmen Yulin Cruz, who had made a public plea for federal aid and criticised the administration's inadequate response: "We are dying, and you are killing us with the inefficiency and the bureaucracy." Trump blamed the island's suffering on Cruz's "poor leadership", and congratulated his administration on doing "a great job".

Following the episode last night, The Simpsons Twitter account re-posted the image alongside a plea for help. Meanwhile, the president chose to devote his Twitter energy to picking fights with his own Secretary of State, so that's fun.
