With mob boss Luca Changretta (Adrien Brody) having declared war on the Shelby family, a cocky John (Joe Cole) was gunned down by Mafia goons.

Is John dead? We'll have to wait a week to find out... though having taken several gunshot wounds to the chest, the prognosis probably isn't good.

Speaking to press including Digital Spy, the Peaky Blinders cast revealed that the ending came as a total surprise to them when they first read it.

"I take my time when I'm reading the scripts," Paul Anderson (Arthur Shelby) explained. "I don't just sit there and fly through them, to be honest. I take my time with them.

"But straight away, as soon as Joe took a bullet, I was like, 'What's going to happen to him?!' -because there was no indication. Nobody ever said anything. There were no clues that something was going to happen."

And if your nerves weren't already shredded enough, Helen McCrory (Aunt Polly) has promised that this was "the first of a few cliffhangers" to come across Peaky's fourth series.

"[Steven Knight, series creator, has] just… he's gone mad," she laughed. "Yeah, I think it's that very exciting thing, where a writer starts to cross boundaries. It's great as a viewer, because you don't know where it's going to stop.

"He continues to break those barriers, which is great for the viewer, because it means you can't trust anything."

Peaky Blinders continues next Wednesday at 9pm on BBC Two.
