So far, there's been much speculation over what will eventually go down in season two of The Handmaid's Tale.

We know that the plot is moving away from the Margaret Atwood book that the series has adapted, with the second season having a more extended run than season one with 13 episodes.

Plus, it recently emerged that the show, which made history by winning the Outstanding Drama Series prize at the Emmy Awards this year, is going to get even darker.

And now, up-and-coming actress Sydney Sweeney has been announced to be joining the cast, according to Variety.

She will play a 15-year-old girl called Eden, who is part of a group that is loyal to the Gilead assembly. Her secret gets out that she wants to become the Commander's wife, but this only happens in full swing around episode 5 and by that time, Offred's pregnancy has become a main focal point.

The Hulu dystopian drama will definitely be bringing back Emmy winner Alexis Bledel's rebel agent Ofglen as well for its 13 new episodes, despite the character facing an uncertain fate last season.

There will also be some important new faces in Gilead, including Veep's Clea DuVall as Ofglen's former wife, who was mentioned but not seen in the first season. We'll see the couple in flashbacks in upcoming episodes.

Sweeney is also set to appear in Netflix's Everything Sucks, a 1990s comedy set in high school, plus she's taking part in HBO drama Sharp Objects alongside Amy Adams.

Season 2 of The Handmaid's Tale will premiere in April 2018.
