While taking questions from the audience, Franco couldn't help but notice a familiar face in the crowd in the form of his frequent collaborator Seth Rogen, who insisted he wasn't there to watch Franco – but to watch the evening's musical guest SZA perform.

In fact, Rogen then claimed he didn't even know Franco was hosting.

"I'm just here to see the show in general," Rogen said. "I didn't realise you were hosting it.

"I put my name in the lottery for SNL tickets and this is the week I got them. Luckily, I'm a huge SZA fan, so it worked out."

"That's really interesting, because I asked you earlier in the week if you'd come by and do a sketch with me, and you told me, 'Sorry, I have something,'" Franco replied.

"Yeah I did have something," Rogen added. "I had SNL tickets and they're really hard to get. People line up outside all night to get them and I got them."

And then Jonah Hill came in.

"Sorry, I'm late," he said. "Did I miss SZA? Who's hosting? Dave Franco?"

"No, Jonah," James said. "It's me...why is Steve Martin here?"

And – incredibly – Steve Martin was there as well.

Franco was on hosting duties to promote his new movie The Disaster Artist.

Based on Tommy Wiseau's infamous film The Room, the movie stars Franco in the lead role of Tommy, while Rogen supports as his fellow director Sandy.

The Disaster Artist is in cinemas now.
