The rise, capture and mysterious escape of Joaquín Archivaldo Guzmán Loera - also know as El Chapo - is one of the most captivating cat and mouse crime stories of modern times, which makes news of a TV series based on the fallen drug lord's life an enticing prospect.

Having found massive success with Narcos, based on the brutal legacy of Pablo Escobar, Netflix is wading back into the drug kingpin genre, with its next series said to be based on the ruthless former head of Mexico's Sinaloa cartel - the world's most powerful until El Chapo's arrest.

Having grown up impoverished and illiterate in rural Mexico, El Chapo climbed the ranks to become leader of the Sinaloa Cartel, with a personal fortune rumoured to amount to more than $1billion and a far-reaching influence that made him one of Mexico's most powerful men.

His infamy spread around the world after he escaped in shady circumstances from a maximum security prison in 2015, later granting a bizarre interview with Sean Penn for Rolling Stone, before being recaptured and extradited to the United States.

Netflix has certainly got some quality material to go with for this one.
