The dystopian future imagined in The Purge - a three-part film series where the '28th Amendment' makes all crimes legal for 12 hours of every year - is set to be turned into a TV series.

Discussing the prohect last year, creator James DeMonaco told Cinema Blend: "My idea is that you do six or seven storylines. And I would kind of intercut them, use flashbacks. It will be interesting to show those dramatic and complex arcs that get people to where they pick up a gun or a knife and kill someone else."

He added: "I like the idea of a maybe 10-hour TV thing on this" explaining that you didn't have the time with a film to "get into the nuance and complexity that would drive someone to commit a terrible act on this night".

Blumhouse Productions have now confirmed they are are taking on production of The Purge TV series saying: "It is a dream that day is here. Julian and his team at ITV are remarkable partners and we can't wait to kick things off with "The Purge". We are excited that with the launch of this new studio, we are expanding our partnership with NBCUniversal by growing The Purge franchise into a television series."

The TV series will run in addition to the film franchise, the next installment of which is due for release in 2018.
