The creators of Game of Thrones are receiving a fair amount of flak for their cringeworthy inclusion of Ed Sheeran in the season 7 premiere. While the show has shoehorned celebrity cameos in the past, at least none of them were essentially promoting their album in a scene.

Sheeran's set to feature in a musical-themed episode called 'Haw-Haw Land', as a character named Brendan who becomes the object of Lisa's affection.

Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, executive producer Al Jean said: "He keeps alternating [between], 'You're not that great, but you could be fantastic,' and she keeps falling for him because of his talent". Season 29 of The Simpsons begins 1 October.
