Seeing as a large majority of us probably spend close to a fiver a day on our coffee habits, it's worth knowing whether or not you're actually ordering a decent caffeine hit - which is why you might want to know the 6 things a barista would never order, courtesy of PureWow.

They spoke to a barista from a coffee shop in New York, and here's what she had to say.

1. Extra-Hot Americano

First things first, what does 'extra hot' even mean? Can you get hotter than hot? Is there anything hotter than boiling water? Apparently not, according to this barista, but rather it just means they add more boiling water and less coffee to your cup. Or they're whacking it in a microwave, which defeats the point of ordering a fancy Americano, anyway.

2. 'Bone-dry' cappuccino

Unless you order these, you're probably unlikely to even know what they mean. So a normal cappuccino is one-third espresso, one-third steamed milk and one-third foam, while a 'bone-dry' cappuccino skips the milk and just adds foam. Which the barista says is not only a 'pain in the butt to make', but 'not even really a beverage'.

3. Skim soy latte

Namely a barista wouldn't order this because a 'skim soy latte' doesn't actually exists. Soy milk is a thing. Skimmed milk is a thing. Skimmed soy milk is not a thing - which is probably why a skim soy latter doesn't exist. Unless you want to have half skimmed milk and half soy milk, but now we're into different territory..

4. A cappuccino with almond milk

Speaking to PureWow, the New York barista explained that almond milk doesn't have the same properties as cow's milk in that it doesn't create a fluffy, dense froth in the same way - so instead of a cappuccino, you're basically just having a coffee shot with slightly thicker (from the milk steaming wand) almond milk.

5. Anything from a 'secret menu' you've read about

Despite some baristas claiming certain coffee shops make insane 'off the menu' drinks out of hours, it's easy to see why you wouldn't - the chances are it probably won't taste as nice as you'd like it to, because if it did? It would most likely be on the menu.
