1 | Dinings SW3

The original Marylebone incarnation of this modern Japanese restaurant has been a discreet – but firm – favourite for in the know Londoners for nearly 10 years. Now, the team (which stems from Nobu) has set up in Knightsbridge as well, tucked into a quiet mews belying the contemporary burst of fresh flavour waiting inside the Grade I listed building. In addition to the trademark tartare tacos (wagyu beef with a smattering of foie gras is incredible), this branch boasts a Josper grill, which it uses on the lobster that takes centre stage of the theatrical, multileveled fruits de mer platter (amid myriad sashimi). Don't miss the black cod spiked with chilli and garlic, and finish up with a trio of delicately infused crème brûlées. A blow-out option that won't induce a food coma.

2 | Wine Car Boot

Roll up, roll up, the greatest possible form of car boot sale is happening once again in King's Cross this Saturday: you won't find any tat here, just lots and lots of wine. And good wine, at that. Founded by sommelier Ruth Spivey, who gets a raft of independent wine sellers and producers on board, entry is free. You can either go straight into shopping mode, or else a £10 tasting pack will equip you with a glass, tokens to exchange for samples, a sensible bottle of water and tote bag for any purchases. Whilst cards are mostly accepted for bottles, you'll need cash for everything else (including the food – which will be necessary). It's lively, informal and a simply delightful way to while away an afternoon, particularly since we're still in London Wine Week until Sunday.

3 | A Taste Of Cornwall At The Goring

The Goring hotel (that small and incredibly smart favourite of the royals) has opened a pop-up summer terrace with Cornwall in mind, thus providing a little seaside oasis not five minutes from Victoria station. And they've got the culinary king of Cornwall himself on board since Rick Stein is heading up the food, with the help of his son Jack. Amidst the sand, shells, fishing boats and nets that have taken over the garden, diners can enjoy fresh seafood done with simple style including crab salad, lobster bisque, grilled lemon sole and a langoustine and monkfish salad. Finish up with gooseberry fool and then set to that bottle of rosé the summery weather dictates (from a Cornish vineyard, of course).

4 | World Gin Day

Another alcoholic festival for you to observe is World Gin Day, which is officially on Saturday but spawning events and special menus all week long. For instance, at The Hoxton hotel in Shoreditch you will find a G&T ice cream parlour set up by the Mediterranean Gin Mare and bespoke ice cream specialists Ruby Violet; pick and mix your flavours and toppings, which all link to the spirit's botanicals (think dried olive, crystallised rosemary, gin-soaked orange peel and so on). Or hail the Sipsmith Gin Cab via social media, and it will drive over and deliver a load of gin-based treats to winners. Then there are the good (if slightly barmy) people of Hendrick's, who have convinced a load of bars to host a 'Cucumber Hour' on Wednesday evening to celebrate World Cucumber Day, where you can turn up with one such salad ingredient and exchange it for a Hendrick's and tonic. We kid you not. And since tonic comes in the same breath as gin, abstainers can head to the Southbank, where Skylon's bar now has a special 'Skytonic' menu on the go. It features non-alcholic concoctions made with Fever Tree products, which are inventive yet not too sickly sweet.

The Taste of London festival begins next week, featuring the great and the good of the restaurant scene. And not just from London: this year's new element is The Taste Residence, which sees world-class chefs cook for small groups of diners in such close proximity that you can watch what's going on and ask questions along the way. These chefs include Alex Atala (of São Paulo's two-Michelin starred D.O.M.), Ana Roš (named World's 50 Best Female Chef of the Year) and London's very own one-starred Ollie Dabbous. Tickets for these special events are selling fast.
