Having been won over by Phillipe Starck's original Mama Shelter hotel in the East End of Paris, we're keen to check out the second opening in Marseilles, cleverly named Mama Shelter Marseilles, which launched this spring.
The same formula which made the Paris hotel such a success has unsurprisingly carried over here.
That means great value rooms (from 69€) which are small but cleverly designed and full of functions; modern but warm design touches throughout that stay on the right side of trendy without trying too hard; and a destination bar and restaurant which dominates the ground floor.
Here the accent is on a Mediterranean menu and the colour scheme is warmer than the monochromes of Paris. If the atmosphere and attitude are in tune with the original, we're hoping this franchise has a lot more cities left in the tank.
