A recent trip to Paris gave us the chance to check in on Philippe Starck's budget hotel offering Mama Shelter. It's full of nice touches as you'd expect - and anywhere with Batman lampshades probably has to get our approval.
The rooms themselves come in 5 different sizes, from the super small la Mama rooms to the Mama Suite with living room and terrace, but all are well kitted out with 24-inch iMacs and free Wi-Fi and characterised by low-lighting, retro furniture and varying takes on unfinished and treated concrete walls.
It's the hotel's communal areas that really make it - bright, well-thought out and quirky in a good way, offering everything from a giant foosball table in the bar, to business meeting rooms that appear to have been themed on some unnamed children's book. There's even scooter hire to explore the surrounding area around Pere Lachaise cemetery. 109 rue de Bagnolet, 75020. Doubles from €89, www.mamashelter.com
