The Virgins of New York show no first-night nerves

We told you about The Virgins last November, the ridiculously young and talented New Yorkers who are bringing catchy tunes, handsome swagger and (dare we say it) funk to indie rock'n'roll.

Soon, the wait for their excellent eponymous debut album will be over - it's available from 20 April (Atlantic Records). In the meantime here's the video for new single "Hey Rich Girl" out on 13 April, and for extra joy, you can get an exclusive download of the track, as covered by another Esquire tip, future-of-electro-glam aka Little Boots, at The Virgins' website, www.sharethevirgins.com

But wait, there's even more. Lead singer Donald Cumming (stop it) pops a cherry on the cake with this little playlist of tracks that have influenced the band on their road to imminent stardom.

1 "Shake Appeal" by Iggy and the Stooges

"Junior high in '94. I baught Raw Power on vinyl at a store on 23rd off 5th ave. There's another version called "Tight Pants" - it's got the foulest drum sound and the clapping is so good."

3 "100 years ago" by the Rolling Stones

4 "When it's Sleepy Time Down South" by Louis Armstrong

5 "Clear Skies" by The Strokes

"This is such an awesome Strokes song! When First Impressions was on the internet I downloaded everything. But when I got the cd this wasn't on it. Maybe its a B-side but it's a big hit on mix tapes."
