Leading your confused date down a creaking staircase into a small unisex toilet does not sound like an auspicious start to an evening (or maybe it does, each to their own). However, this is exactly what Londoners have been doing since speakeasy and rum bar PortSide Parlour opened earlier this year.
Hidden beneath bar Off Broadway in Bethnal Green, you need to squeeze into a cubicle and flush an old-fashioned cistern (helpfully labelled ‘flush to enter’) to be welcomed into PortSide Parlour. Stepping through the hidden door leads to an intimate, nautical-inspired interior – and, more importantly, some of the best rum in town. Appleton Estate Rum sponsors this speakeasy, but Appleton is just one of over fifty rums on the extensive menu.
Originally a short-term pop-up bar, PortSide Parlour’s residency has thankfully been extended to a year. Once you’ve arrived, we recommend you start with their trademark Old Fashioned, which is made with a full-bodied twelve-year old Appleton rum. One of their most popular drinks, Portside Parlour's bartenders have also given us the recipe, so you can now try it at home.
