In 2010 sales of Prosecco reached a record 380 million bottles, 10 million more than champagne that year. It’s a trend that’s continued with more of us opting for softer Italian sparkling wines over the occasionally astringent French equivalents.
Another Italian option worth trying is Franciacorta from Lombardy, which is crisper, fuller-bodied and more complex than Prosecco.
The best bit? A good bottle of Franciacorta such as this, the brilliant Electo Majolini, easily matches the quality of a good champagne and is easier on the pocket too.
