The chippie in South East London has attracted 440 reviews at the time of publication, with an average score of 5 out of 5. Ecstatic reviews describe the fare variously as 'sublime', 'the best fish and chips ever' and 'like art'.

The best bit is that the Golden Chippy is no pretentious, artisan distortion of the national dish, either – a traditional cod and chips comes in at a reasonable £7.20 (standard) or £9 (large).

Owner Chris Kanizi told the Evening Standard: "The secret is to do the job properly properly with lots and lots of TLC.

"You have to love your job and only serve what's good enough for your belly. It's a very simple policy."
