This Ranking Of Fried Breakfast Ingredients Gives You Hope For Britain's Future

We are one nation, united in pig parts

In post-Brexit Britain it can be easy to wonder how much you really have in common with your fellow countrymen. As a people, it is hard to think of a time when we've been more fractured, more weary of each other's values and motives.

Which is why, in its small way, this latest YouGov poll about the greatest meal ever devised – the traditional Full English breakfast – is important.

The question was a simple one that has ignited passionate intellectual debate in pubs and cafes across the country for centuries now: which ingredient is most vital to a good fry up?

Unless you're being subversive for the sake of it – or you're a vegetarian, which in this context is more or less the same thing – the answer is going to be bacon, isn't it. A rasher or four is the only thing a Full English really can't do without.

And reassuringly, the nation agrees - 89% put the streaky stuff top of their list. Perhaps there is most that unites us than divides us after all.

Next on the list was sausage, meaning the essence of a Full English – namely loads of unhealthy pig parts – has not been surrendered to either globalisation nor decades of health fads. Another blessed relief.

Toast – the unsung hero, the glue that keeps the fry up together, the essential scoop that unites the ingredients as one – comes in at an impressive third, after which eggs, hash browns and mushrooms take their rightful place in the top ten.

One of the many charms of the Full English is that it is the only dish in existence in which the presence of chips can seem 'a bit posh', as a distant 17th ranking proves.

Meanwhile the truly sick are represented down in 19th, where a still-too high 6% of respondents asked for pancakes - a request that can rightly still see you arrested in some smaller towns in the Northumberland area.
