Wine for the Easter weekend - Sonoma Coast chardonnay

A few days ago we found ourselves in Kentucky, at 10pm, eating bison burgers (don’t ask) — but one of the better decisions of the evening was to order a bottle of this extremely tasty chardonnay.

Made by one of the US’s cult producers (S-C is consistently voted America’s favourite), this big, luscious wine has style as well as substance.

Although it is, apparently, made in a Burgundian method, Sonoma Coast delivers a powerful hit of fruit (melon, pineapple) unlike anything you’ll taste in France, tempered with elegant minerality and nuttiness. It’s complex enough to inspire repeat visits (though we’ll be picking it up at our local rather than in Louisville) and butch enough to liven even the most weary palate. £10 at Waitrose (www.waitrosewine.com)
