Last night, Esquire found itself in the very agreeable surroundings of The Clarendon, an extremely nice pub located between Holland Park and Ladbroke Grove. We got talking to the owner Mikee, who took us down to his superb wine cellar and cracked open a bottle of cheekily named South African red, Goats Do Roam. And this was when he told us about his souped-up Tuk Tuk...
It turns out that Mikee runs a company called Idlewine and uses the vehicle to deliver wine all over west London - even if it does struggle on some of the hills. Idlewine, he told us, is a friendly and approachable wine club and boutique wine merchant. Based in Notting Hill, they are aiming to bring back the romance of wine along with the genuine customer service you used to be offered at your local shop.
"We don’t ever want to feel like an online supermarket and we will make sure your experience with us is as bespoke and personal as possible," he explained. "Our goal is to make buying and enjoying wine a fun, sociable and easy experience. We are an open door to a handpicked cellar of amazing wines and a source of easy wine knowledge in an industry that loves to bamboozle and too often confuse."
And better still, Mikee will rock up to your house with the wine in the back of what surely must be the coolest vehicle in the capital. For more information, see www.idlewine.co.uk
