A 19th Century engine shed might seem a disconsonant choice of venue for Jay-Z to warm up his tonsils ahead of a supporting turn for Coldplay this weekend, but at last night's Roundhouse gig it proved to be an inspired decision.

After 11 number one albums and a much-publicised difference of opinion with Oasis, the ever modest statesman of hip hop seemed in his element performing to a sell-out crowd of 3,500 Roc-a-philes, in the (comparatively) intimate surroundings of the Camden landmark.

Posturing, bouncing, and air-drumming his way through an exhausting 22-track set list, he also couldn't resist conducting the audience through an impromptu chorus of Wonderwall. Well, you would, wouldn't you?
