Wine for the weekend - Promis Ca'marcanda

We’re cheating somewhat with this one because while you could quite happily pull the cork this evening, to experience it in all its glory requires waiting a couple more years. Still, our sample bottle didn’t even make it as far as Saturday night, and we can happily report that there is much to savour from this excellent Tuscan red, even before it reaches its prime.

Though Promis’s pedigree is rapidly becoming established, its first vintage was as recent as 2000 (the maker, Gaja, cultivated its expertise producing its more famous wine in Piedmont). But to taste it is to join the cult following. In the glass, it is inky and wonderfully dark, and its nose and flavour are equally imposing: rich black fruits, spice and oak combine to create a silky wine that would make a brilliant partner to robust beef daubes. £22 at www.armit.co.uk
