How The Square Mile Became The Most Happening District In London

No, really

Most Popular

For too long, London’s Square Mile has been overrun with swarms of City boys downing Jägerbombs and weeing on national monuments. No longer.

Over the past year or so a spate of trendy new openings have taken the capital’s financial district by storm, and they’re open to all (the less suity you are, however, the better).

From the brilliant Japanese fusion of Sushisamba and the artery-clogging haute-stodge of Duck & Waffle, to inventive cocktails at The South Place Hotel and the rumoured (we repeat, rumoured) opening from Chris Corbin and Jeremy King in the new Pinnacle tower, it’s all going on.

Here’s our edit of the best new openings to take the City by storm.

1 | Sushisamba
Set at the top of the Heron Tower at the heart of the City, Sushisamba’s unique take on the fishy stuff has for the past few years been gaining momentum Stateside. The group’s British incarnation, however, is by far the strongest – and not least for the incredible views across the capital. Try the rock shrimp tempura, load up on the spicy mayo and be sure to ask for a window table.

2| The Jugged Hare
Located behind Moorgate Station, The Jugged Hare opened last year to rave reviews. A proper foodie pub in a sea of slightly shabby booze-only establishments , this winter the Hare is setting its sights on game. Head chef Richard O' Connell's "Dude Food" menu is the one to sample, with boneless grouse wings, wild boar and black pudding lollipops and venison scotch eggs among the highlights. That said, you'll be equaly as welcome if you just fancy a pint with the papers on a Sunday.

3 | Galvin La Chapelle
The latest addition to the Galvin Brother's dining empire, La Chapelle is an altar to proper French cuisine. With more of a Mayfair hotel vibe than anything traditionally "City," it boats spot-on service, opulent surroundings, a great atmosphere and exceedingly rich food. Whatever you order for starter and main, be sure to finish with the legendary tarte tatin. It's crisply, chewy, apple-y, buttery – the best we've ever had.

4 | HKK
The most recent opening from the world-dominating Hakkasan group; the only thing you should be eating in the airy surrounds of HKK – set just north of Liverpool Street station on Worship Street – is the 15 course tasting menu. You’ll never look at cows in the same way after you try the jasmine tea smoked Wagyu beef with water chestnut.

5 | South Place Hotel
The first purpose-built hotel to open in the Square Mile in 100 years, the super-trendy South Place is also the only independently-owned luxury hotel in the City.  With three bars and two restaurants (including a rooftop terrace), the 3 South Place Bar & Grill is where we based ourselves on our last two visits. Be sure to try an amalfi sunset, made with lillet blanc, aperol, grapefruit, lemon and rhubarb bitters – it’s the new negroni.
