5 Healthy Ways To Beat Your Hangover

Overindulged this bank holiday? It's OK, science can help

We asked some of the UK's finest rest and relaxation venues to share their tips for getting over a hangover.

Back up by science – rather than unfounded faith in greasy food types – these concoctions will get you back on your feet in no time.

1 | Coconut water (and eggs)
Coconut water is amazing for re-hydrating cells and it contains loads of potassium. Because alcohol draws water from your body, it increases the amount you urinate. You lose a lot of potassium in the urine, and low potassium can cause many hangover symptoms. So, drink that coconut water and eat some eggs. The body needs amino acids that come from the protein in eggs to help the liver recover and to get you feeling back on track, especially as the amino acid, cysteine, helps to breakdown toxins in the body.

2 | Milk thistle
Take milk thistle. This amazing herb supports the liver in metabolising alcohol and liver cell renewal. Take two capsules after a night on the booze.

3 | Olive oil
First off, don't drink on an empty stomach. Second, after your dinner, have a spoon of pure olive or coconut oil. It protects the stomach and helps the liver process the alcohol.

4 | Water (but not as you know it)
Warm water with ginger, lemon, and manuka honey will alkalise the body, settle the digestion, and boost the immune system.

5 | Green smoothies
Chlorophyll is the green pigment that gives plants their colour and enables them to convert solar energy into food energy. Chlorophyll acts as both a liver tonic and a liver cleanse. Here's the recipe for our Ultimate Green Smoothie Recipe. Drink it every day and not only will you avoid hangovers, but after two weeks your skin will appear fresher and less lined and your energy levels will be much higher, too.

- ¼ pineapple
- 1 celery stick
- 2 golden delicious apples
- ½ lime peeled
- Slice of lemon with peel
- Thumb nail of fresh ginger
