The fried poultry hotspots worth a flying visit

For those of you who like your poultry southern fried, fret not.

Forget KFC – whether it's boneless thigh or buffalo wings, these are the best places in the capital to tuck into chicken, cooked the way you like it.

1 | Joe's Southern Kitchen [above]

If it's American-style dining you're after, Joe's is the place for you. The large array of succulent dishes on offer at both their Covent Garden and Kentish Town spots are headed by this signature – sweet tea brined fried chicken, boosted by the layering of lemon salt and tobasco honey; we suggest sharing the affordable half bird between two for a modest £14.

2 | Rita's Bar and Dining

This Hackney staple stands out for offering unique variations on the simple fried chicken dish. While their boneless thigh roll does the trick, it's the lunchtime buttermilk option, combined with stout waffles, that proves the standout. Did we mention it's drizzled with warm honey and sausage gravy? Go all the way and add a side of maple bacon for £4.

3 | The Lockhart

A fresh breath of Southen American air, The Lockhart is the brainchild of Mississippi-born chef Brad McDonald who brought this restaurant experience to London last year. His refined southern fried chicken recipe takes centre entrée stage, arriving on the plate with coleslaw and collard greens. Probably the only locale in the world you can sit on antique railway benches while munching on chicken-fried Pheasant.

4 | Bird

'The best free range chicken you've ever tasted' is one hell of an opening gambit – but it's one Bird confidently goes for; situated on Kingsland Road, this eatery bears an entire menu devoted to fried chicken. Refreshingly, it's left to the customers to choose how many pieces they want, how dark they want it and which glaze they'd like it cooked in. There are plenty of alternative options too, including the Mu Shu Crispy Fried Chicken burger – a concoction of chopped fried thighs, thin Chinese pancakes and scallions with a tonkatsu sauce.

5 | CHICKENLiquor

An offshoot of MEATLiquor, this south London establishment – formerly known as Wishbone – is a vibrant addition alongside Brixton's independent shops and stalls. Drop in and order the barbecue buffalo wings which come armed with a blue cheese dip with a recommended side order of both 'slaw and cheese fries. A few beverages from the impressively extensive drinks menu later and you'll be perfectly prepped for your night ahead.

Unit 12 Market Row, Brixton Market, London, SW9 8PR,

6 | Chooks

Beloved by its locals, Chooks (Aussie slang for 'chicken') is a family establishment designed to bring you high-quality yet affordable fried dishes. With several chicken trays and a salad option on offer, it's the buttermilk chicken with mash and gravy that remains the quintessential pick. They're also notable for offering takeaway options.

7 | Jubo

Known in its native as yangnyeom tongdak, the delicacy of Korean fried chicken has risen in popularity across Asia and the USA of late – and now Londoners can jump on the bandwagon thanks to Jubo, a Korean canteen situated in the lobby of Shoreditch's Bedroom Bar. Double-fried for extra crunch, the dish comes as wings or strips smothered in a distinct soy garlic, hot or volcanic sauce.

68 Rivington Street, London, EC21 3AY, 0207 033 0198,

8 | Clutch

A cosy family-owned locale tucked away on the corner of a suburban street at East London's core (minutes from Columbia Road Market), Clutch is a winning discovery for any poultry fiend. Combine the delectable menu – the highlight of which is either the standard peppery buttermilk or Happy Hens, a peanut and chilli crust fried chicken – with the thematic flourishes (the bill is brought to you in a golden egg) and Clutch becomes a secret you'll want to keep hold of.
