Top five steak restaurants

Where can you find Britain's best steaks? Peter Harden, co-publisher Harden's Restaurant Guides, suggests five of the best:

1 Goodman
Who'd have guessed the best of London's new-wave steakhouses would be backed by Russian money? There are USDA (US Department of Agriculture) steaks if you want, but the burger is also a treat. (26 Maddox Street, London W1S 1QH, + 44 20 7499 3776)

2 Hix Oyster & Chop House
Where better to enjoy a steak than London's very own 'meatpacking district'? And ex-Caprice supremo Mark Hix knows how to cook a mean steak. We have high hopes for his new Soho opening, Hix. (36-37 Greenhill Rents, Cowcross Street, London EC1M 6BN, +44 20 7017 1930)

3 Le Relais de Venise L'Entrecôte
Perhaps the French do know something about cooking. This cheerful bistro-style space has been full of City diners enjoying delicious Scottish steaks - plus a "famous secret sauce" - since the place opened earlier this year. And at prices just right pour le crunch. (5 Throgmorton Street, London EC2N 2AD, +44 20 7638 6325)

4 The Hinds Head
Heston Blumenthal's ûber-taven is located across the road from the fabled Fat Duck. Yes, the meat's great, but where else in the world can you be sure of having Heston's world-famous triple-cooked chips to go with it? (High Street, Bray SL6 2AB, +44 1628 626151)

5 The Grill on the Alley
OK, it may just be a member of a group (Blackhouse), but this city-centre steakhouse is becoming a real 'destination' - a really good all-rounder in a city where, until recently at least, such places have been hard to find. (5 Ridgefield, Manchester M2 6EG, +44 161 833 3465)
