Earlier this month, it was reported that a new Antipode plane could fly from the UK to New York in 20 minutes. While we might have to wait a while to travel at supersonic speeds, there's more great news when it comes to getting to the Big Apple; flights are set to be a lot cheaper next year.

According to The Telegraph, budget airline Norwegian plans to cut the price of flights from Edinburgh to secondary airports in New York to just £56 one-way starting in summer 2017. While passengers won't be able to fly directly to main airports like JFK, the transatlantic flights are likely to tempt many travellers by being the cheapest by far on the market.

In order to keep costs down, the airline will avoid basing their fleet in London and will use the Boeing 737MAX aircraft, which burns less fuel than other long-haul planes.

"Our planes are very, very fuel efficient," Bjorn Kjos, chief executive of the Oslo-based airline, explained. "We have a totally different set up to other airlines. The Boeing 737MAX has a very modern engine, which means it can go for a longer distance."

Norwegian currently operates flights twice a day from Gatwick to New York with prices starting from around £125 one-way. Although the cheaper tickets will not be available from the capital, the airline has confirmed it will double the number of flights from London to the US next year. Manhattan, here we come.
