We love Paris in the winter

Paris is our kind of town any time of year — yes, even when it drizzles — but it helps when you have a good excuse (leftover holiday quota to use up), a reasonably priced train fare (thank you Eurostar) and a great place to stay.

The Radisson Blu Le Metropolitan Hotel is in the chi-chi 16eme arrondisement (hey, there is life outside the Marais you know) and has recently been given a luxurious refurbishment. The rooms are small but elegant, the staff are helpful but discreet, the breakfasts are delicious and the views, particularly from the Tour-Eiffel-facing suite on the top floor, charming. And, almost unbelievably for a boutique Parisian hotel, there's a swimming pool in the basement (though its size is more conducive to a refreshing dip than an Olympic work-out). Should you fancy popping over to pick up some festive foie gras, rooms start from 260 Euros. www.radissonblu.com/hotel-pariseiffel
