Samsung has unveiled its second generation of smartwatches, two new handsets – sorry “wristsets” – titled the Gear 2 and Gear Neo 2.

Announced ahead of the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, both touchscreen sets will feature heart rate sensors and pedometers, in addition to tools to help measure sleep and stress levels.

Oh and of course, you can text, read emails and receive calls.

The 2 mega pixel camera on the Gear 2 has also been moved to the main face on the watch as opposed to the strap, making it easier to take cheeky snaps of people in public or on the tube without looking like a nutter. The Neo comes sans camera, but as a result is 13g grams lighter.

Devices will operate using the new Tizen OS, a rival similar to that of an Android or an Apple iOS device. Running as a Linux based operating system, Tizen will have its initial launch over in the US on the 1 March. Created by the whizzes at Intel and Samsung, Tizen is said to be compatible with future Galaxy devices.

Sounding great so far? There’s a bit of a catch. You have to have your smartphone nearby to use the Gear 2 to it’s full potential, and of course, it’s only available to Samsung Galaxy users. But on the plus side, both will have a projected battery life of two to three days.

Samsung also released details on two more gadgets, the Galaxy S5 and the Gear Fit. Featuring a plastic body with a leatherette back, the S5 will contain a fingerprint sensor, 16 mega pixel camera, and will even be water and dust proof.

Containing a few similarities to the Gear 2 such as monitoring calls, texts and emails, the Gear Fit can also be used to choose songs paired up with your Galaxy device. The most impressive thing about the little thing is that it'll detect if you haven't moved in a while; giving you a nudge to get on with a jog or an extra workout. Prices aren't available for either the S5 or the curved touchscreen Gear Fit yet, but both are expected to hit shelves around the same time as the Gear 2.

Samsungs announcements come way ahead of the long-awaited Apple iWatch, which is also rumoured to focus on health and fitness, and feature a curved display screen, wireless charging capabilities, and possibly even an iOS8 update.

The camera-ready Gear 2 will launch in Charcoal Black, Gold Brown and Wild Orange, while the Neo will also be available in Mocha Grey.

There's no price tag for either as of yet, but both are set to be released simultaneously in April.
