1 | The shirt that can read how happy you are

Ready to bang your head on a brick wall the next time someone tells you about a new 'smart' product? Well this will make you really stressed.

Tech company Intel's CEO Brian Krzanich turned up to this week's Re/Code Code Conference in California wearing a shirt fitted with a chip which can read your heart rate and measure your emotional state. Krzanich says that the chip can be taken out of clothing when it needs washing, but apparently it can handle rainfall.

The aim is to produce clothing that fitness freaks can use to keep track of their statistics when they're completing a double triathlon or whatever. Word on the street is they should be on sale to the public by summer, but there's no mention of how much it might cost yet.

2 | The road that makes renewable energy

We've been thinking for a while now that it's time to upgrade roads. They get icy and slippery in winter, the tarmac gets overly hot in summer – not good.

A new Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign is underway to try and change all that. US-based start-up 'Solar Roadways' have come up with solar panels that can withstand even the heaviest of trucks, come with inbuilt heat monitors to prevent extreme temperatures, can light up to create road markings and, most significantly, can turn roads into sources of renewable energy.

The husband and wife inventor duo behind the product are currently working on producing a car park prototype, so it might not be too long before we see similar technology used over here.

3 | The torch you can cook eggs with

Are you still cooking eggs in a pan like a loser? Well, it's time to upgrade. With The Flashtorch, the latest product from handheld laser company Wicked Lasers, you can produce a 4,100 lumens beam: so hot you can actually use to make dinner. Crafted from military-grade aluminium, its halogen bulb has 2,000 hours of life in it. Pretty damn powerful then – and yours for a very reasonable $199.95.

4 | Bury your beers in the garden

Now here's a great use of all that unused space beneath the ground. The eCool is a contraption devised by four ale loving guys in Denmark, who, in true Scandi fashion, are on a mission to give that battered environment of ours a little help.

Rather than using an energy-guzzling fridge to keep your tinnies cool, pile them into this 113 cm, 12kg device. It holds 24 cans and can be used all year round – but you do need to get yourself a drill and install the thing yourself.

They've got an introductory offer of £208, so get in there early if you want a slice of the eco-booze pie.

5 | The tennis coach on your wrist

Like the football that gives you pointers on your scoring, this is a piece of tech that can give you smart information on how you can improve your game. Smash is a wristband that hooks up with an app to provide information on your swing and hit, by using a number of in-built sensors to measure your speed, spin, wrist rotation, stroke trajectory and overall technique.

Its Melbourne-based inventor is currently $170,000 AUD from his Kickstarter goal with 42 days to go, so we'll see if this ends up in production or not.
