London’s Morton Metropolis, one of the capital’s hottest new galleries, has announced it is to host the first UK solo exhibition in three years from provocative image-maker, social commentator and visual spokesperson, Stuart Semple.
Semple promises ‘The Happy House’ will lift the lid on the state of Britain as we prepare to head to the polls. “I feel I have been analysing popular culture from outside itself by using its own languages,” says the artist whose work depicts a world that’s underpinned by the daily cycle of tabloids, Hollywood movies, and media intrusion.
Consisting of 10 to 12 large paintings underscored by his signature use of text, each work will be a self-contained story yet also relate to the other pieces on show. And lurking beneath lurid surfaces like the one you see above are Semple’s fears about his generation, as well as his commentary on the artifice of media obsession, politics and disappointment.
