In some cases, seeing thing are otherwise invisible would be quite handy. Radiation. Carbon monoxide leaks. Ghosts.

A new project conducted at the Copenhagen Institute Of Interaction Design sheds light on something else you can't see - the electromagnetic force fields surrounding electronic devices. And while it's not particularly useful, seeing what emanates from your laptop (perhaps as you're reading this) is quite remarkable.

The pair responsible, Luke Sturgeon and Shamik Ray, created a mobile phone app that allows them to draw and map EMFs using built-in magnetic sensors. By dragging the device across laptops, radios, speakers and other devices, they were able to generate an image showing how strong the electromagnetic field is.

“We were surprised by the difference in magnetic strengths between objects,” Luke Sturgeon, one of the designers, told Wired.

“And how strong the electromagnetic field is around hard drives and laptop computers and mobile phones, all of which we live in constant close proximity to.”
